OCR Level 2 National Certificate in Health & Social Care
What will I learn?
The qualification sceptically aims to:
- Develops candidate’s knowledge & understanding of health and social care
- Develop skills, knowledge and understanding in contexts that are directly relevant to employment situations.
- Develop candidates’ ability to work effectively in health and social care context.
- Enable the candidate to demonstrate knowledge and understanding in specialist areas of health and social care and demonstrate the skills to participate in real situations.
- Encourage progression by assisting in the development of skills, knowledge and understanding that candidates need to access further education opportunities or occupational training.
- Gain confidence by developing independent learning
What do I have to do to achieve this qualification?
To achieve this qualification you must complete six units and provide evidence that you have met the assessment objectives described in each unit.
What is evidence?
Evidence is your proof that you have met the requirements of the qualification Evidence could be:
- Completed assignments
- Products of real work that you have completed during work experience
- Statement from witnesses
- Records of your assessor observing you carrying out your work
Evidence could be anything that proves:
- What you can do
- How well you do it
- The level of knowledge you have in relation to what you do and
- The level of understanding you have about what you do, how you do it, and why you do it.
Homework
Homework is essential, as it will enable you to complete the course on time and also enable you to gain a higher grade you will be expected to complete 6 hours of homework during each week.
This could be:
- Research
- IT work
Can I develop my full range of skills by doing this course?
As well as covering the National Certificate in Health and Social Care you will develop your Key Skills in the areas of:
- Communication
- Application of Number
- Information Technology
What courses or employment can I progress to at the end of my course? A National Certificate is equivalent to 4 GCSEs at grades A-C. You can progress to further Level 3 qualifications, GCE in Health & Social Care, A Levels or other subjects of your choice such as CACHE course in childcare. Or you could choose to enter employment through work related programmes within a wide range of Health and social Care environments.
The choice is up to you.

What will I learn?
You will:
- Gain a broad understanding of health & social care and early years working environments
- Develop skills, knowledge and understanding in health, social care and early years
- Have an opportunity to apply learning in a practical and realistic way
- Follow a programme of study that enables progression to both higher education and employment in health, social care and early years
- Develop Key Skills that are highly valued by employers and universities
- Gain confidence by developing independent learning
What assessment will I do?
Two thirds of the course will be internally assessed through a programme of assignments set and marked by your teacher and externally verified by the exam board.
One third of the course will be externally assessed through tests set by the exam board. Your GCE in Health and Social Care is equivalent to one Advanced GCSE pass at grades A-E.
Year 12 and 13
In year 12 you will complete units 1, 2 and 3. This will gain you an AS in Health and Social Care with a pass grade at A-E. The following year you will complete the remaining units so that you gain your Advanced GCE in Health and Social Care.
Private Study is important because it helps train you to be an independent learner and you may need the information gathered for your lesson. You will be set work for your private study time. It will be either using computer to IT up work set in class or completing research required for the next lesson. This private study is part of your timetabled lesson for health and social care and work set must be completed in that time.
Homework
You will be expected to complete 6 hours of homework each week Homework is very important as it will enable you to complete the course on time and also will help determine the final grade you achieve as you will have put in the extra effort to achieve your potential.
Deadline dates must be kept so that your portfolio work is completed, marked and ready to be dispatched to the exam board by the date set by the exam board.
Can I develop my full range of skills by doing this course?
As well as completing an AVC you will also develop your Key Skills towards a Key
Skills qualification in the areas of:
- Communication
- Application of Number
- Information Technology
Where can this subject lead?

- Nurse Training or other Health-related careers
- Social work
