Music

Aims
The Music Department will encourage students to express themselves through the arts and present their ideas to others. Students will develop qualities of intuition, imagination, exploration, analysis and critical reflection. They will learn to appreciate the cultural, historical, political and social context of the arts.

There is now a large body of research evidence that every normal and healthy human is musical. And for many of us, music forms an important and essential part of our everyday lives.

What are the advantages of studying Music?

  • Music is a universal language: it is the most unique and powerful form of communication for all people regardless of age, background, ability and interests
  • Develop key skills such as confidence, performance under pressure, teamwork, co-ordination, memory etc
  • Relieve tensions and stress: thus helping us to relax
  • Enable us to explore, develop and express our inner feelings, ideas and emotions freely.
Addition Opportunities in Music

The Music Department offers a wealth of instrumental lessons through the Bradbourne Instrumental Tuition Scheme. We are fortunate to have access to a team of well qualified and experienced professional musicians to teach a range of musical instruments to our students. Instrumental lessons are one-to-one, for 20 minutes each week. The charge for lessons is £54 in advance per half term (six lessons) representing excellent value for money.

Music Grade examinations

We encourage all our students learning an instrument to work towards a practical music examination. Depending on the instrument and focus of instrument we offer the students an opportunity to take Trinity Guildhall or Associated Board. These examinations assess performance and technical skills from beginner to accomplished performer. Music exams are accredited in England, Wales and Northern Ireland by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, DELLS and CEA.  They also attract UCAS points for students applying to UK colleges and universities.  Various arrangements are in place with education authorities worldwide.

Performance Opportunities

The Music Department holds a number of concerts throughout the year. We aim to provide a mixture of musical opportunities for students to perform in different environments, to a variety of audiences allowing the students to develop a wide music vocabulary.

We also have the facility to invite Music Professionals in to work with students in a variety of workshops. This year Samba has been very successful and we now have a Samba band.
