The RPE department at Knole Academy strives to engage pupils in multiple enquiries into significant human questions which religion and worldviews address. We want our students to develop the understanding and skills needed to appreciate and appraise varied responses to these questions and develop responses of their own. This is in line with the Kent Agreed Syllabus that we follow across all key stages.

We are seeking to enable student to participate in meaningful academic conversation about those with faith or none; in doing this is will allow students to develop their own responses to questions and issues covered in RPE.

Key Stage 3

Key Stage 3

During students’ study in years 7, 8 and 9 we will look at many different faiths and also those without faith.

Within this study we will look at:

Year 7

  • An introduction to religious studies- what is it all about.
  • What is so radical about Jesus?
  • What is good and what is challenging about being a teenager with faith in Britain today?

Year 8

  • How can people express the spiritual through music and art?
  • Does religion help people to be good?
  • Is death the end? Does it matter?

Year 9

  • Do we need to prove God’s existence?
  • Why is there suffering? Are there any good solutions?
  • Is religion a power for peace or a cause of conflict in the world today?

Key Stage 4 GCSE

Key Stage 4

In years 10 and 11 students may opt for this subject at GCSE. Alongside this, during afternoon registration students will also follow a core religious studies programme; this will differ from the GCSE but will supplement the students studying the full course GCSE.
GCSE Religious Studies This GCSE course will further students’ study of RPE at Key Stage 3. In learning about religions the students will be able to develop their own attitudes towards religious issues. They will also further understand how RPE forms the basis of our culture.
We follow the AQA Religious Studies A specification (8062). This subject is assessed through 100% examination with the two components (see below).
Paper 1 – The study of religions: beliefs, teachings and practices. We will be focusing on Christianity and Buddhism. The exam is 1 hour and 45 minutes and is worth 50% of the GCSE.
Paper 2 – Thematic studies. We will be focusing on four themes: relationships and families, religion and life, the existence of God and revelation, religion, crime and punishment. The exam is 1 hour and 45 minutes and is worth 50% of the GCSE.

Key Stage 4 Core Studies

Core Religious Studies

During students’ study of Core Religious Studies in afternoon registration taught by their tutor and monitored by the Head of Year and Head of Department, students will look at themes. This will support those students who have opted for GCSE Religious Studies.

Themes will include things like:

  • Medical ethics
  • Human sexuality – heterosexual and homosexual relationships
  • The roles of men and women including gender equality
  • Animal experimentation
  • Euthanasia
  • Abortion
  • Science and religion
  • Violence and Pacifism
  • Punishment, etc.

Key Stage 5

Students in Sixth Form at Knole Academy will follow a programme of study for RPE alongside their studies of IBCP.
