A career in the Hair and Beauty industry can be very rewarding.  The industry offers a variety of roles most being both social and creative.  At Knole Academy we offer industry ready, Technical qualifications at KS5 (Sixth Form).  Courses are delivered within a realistic salon environment where members of the public are welcome. 

The City & Guilds qualification provides learners with the knowledge, understanding and skills to operate in employment as a junior / entry-level stylist completing foundation and some more advanced services. 

At KS4 the courses introduce the learner to the hair & beauty industry.  The Level 1 qualifications is GCSE 4-1 equivalency and at Level 2 is 9-4 equivalency.  A learner can progress form these qualifications directly to those offered at post-16.

Period Allocation: Part time over 2 years.

This qualification is designed for learners with an interest in pursuing a career in the Hair and Beauty sector

AIMS:

  • To provide a broad background of understanding of the hair and beauty sector and the vocational skills required
  • To provide a knowledge of the range of jobs and work settings in the sector to enable students to make an informed choice of career, or career change
  • To enable students to make an informed assessment of their own aptitude for work in this sector
  • To help the students reach a level of knowledge and skills which will facilitate progress into employment in the sector, to further vocational learning or to continued general education

And for key stage 4 learners in particular to introduce to the student to the disciplines of the working environment, to motivate and re-engage students in the continuing learning process

TEACHING METHODS:

The learner will take part in workshops in the realistic learning environment (RLE) and from time to time assist the RWE (realistic working environment). 

Classroom activities will include individual and group work, completing questions and answers, taking part in game like activities, research will be carried out and then discussed.  Note taking will be required and ICT interactive activities will also be used, research visits will take place, there will be guest speakers. 

ASSESSMENT:

In general terms, the practical assessment for each unit comprises of two components – practical observation and assignments.  There are a few units however that do not require observations, that are assessed by assignment only

Assignments are simple research tasks that are intended to encourage learners to explore trends and fashions in the hair and beauty sectors.  Though they are, of course, assessment devises they should also be an enjoyable experience for the learner and aid the learning process. 

Entry requirement

Suitable applicants will have an interest / passion for hairdressing, be of smart appearance and have good interpersonal skills.  Applicants will have / or be of the ability to obtain 4 GCSE’s grade E or above.

HOMEWORK:

Learners will be expected to complete some of the research assignment criteria in their own time and practice their practical skills. 

COSTS:

Please note there will be educational trips arranged throughout the year to enhance the course delivery, however costs for these optional trips will be advised nearer the time. 

HOW PARENTS CAN HELP:

Learners will require support through their learning programme and a salon work placement is an advantage. 

This is a National Curriculum foundation/ an enrichment subject

Progression

Upon successful completion of this qualification the learner may progress, subject to a successful interview, to a level 2 qualification.  Alternatively progress to an apprenticeship and complete a level two in Hairdressing, Barbering or Beauty Therapy.

Key Stage 4 - Level 2 (Technical) Award in Hair and Beauty Studies Pre-16 (3038-21)

This qualification is designed for learners wishing to gain foundation knowledge of the hairdressing and beauty therapy industry. 

AIMS:

  • To provide a understanding of the industry as a whole
  • To enable students to make an informed assessment of their own interest for work in this sector

LESSONS:

To achieve this qualification, candidates must achieve all of the mandatory units below and at least one optional unit.

MANDATORY GENERIC UNITS:

  • 201 : Exploring the world of hair & beauty; 30GLH
  • 202: Science of hair & beauty; 60GLH
  • 203: Design in the hair and beauty sector; 30GLH

TEACHING METHODS:

The learner will take part in classroom activities that will include individual and group work, completing questions and answers, taking part in game like activities, research will be carried out and then discussed.  Note taking will be required and ICT interactive activities will also be used to facilitate learning. 

ASSESSMENT:

There is an externally set, externally moderated synoptic assignment and an externally set and marked exam. 

HOMEWORK:

Learners will be expected to complete the research assignments in their own time and revise for knowledge testing.

HOW PARENTS CAN HELP:

Learners will require support through their learning programme.  Learners will be expected to word-process their research and report assignments, so access to a PC at home is advantageous although not essential.  The school provides ICT facilities that learners can access outside of their timetabled study periods.

This is a National Curriculum foundation subject.

The qualification has been mapped to provide underpinning knowledge towards the relevant VRQ, however, successful completion of this qualification does not imply occupational competence.  This qualification does not require the learner to demonstrate skills on ‘paying clients’ in the realistic working environment, under commercial pressures and within commercially acceptable service times. 

PROGRESSION:

Upon successful completion of this qualification you can progress on to a ladies hairdressing or barbering Apprenticeship, a level two skills based qualification or a level 3 Technical Certificate in Hair & Beauty Studies. Students will be expected to re-apply and be interviewed for these progression courses.

Key Stage 5 - Course Details - Level 2 Technical Certificate in Hairdressing

KS5 Cutting & Styling & Colouring

Level 2 Technical Certificate in Cutting and Styling (6002-22) 360GLH  
Level 2 Technical Certificate in Colouring (6002-23) 360GLH

Period Allocation: Full-time 2 year

The Level 2 Technical Certificates aim to provide you with a range of specialist foundation skills and technical knowledge that will equip you to seek employment or further training within the hairdressing industry.  

The level 2 is a two year course consisting of two qualifications, the Technical Certificate in Cutting and Styling and the Technical Certificate in Colouring.  
If the student already has significant experience of the hairdressing industry they may be entered for the Level 2 Technical Certificate in Hairdressing (6002-21) 450GLH, a one year course, this decision will be made by the Subject Leader as applicable.  

For the Level 2 Technical Certificate for Cutting and Styling Services the teaching programme must cover the content detailed in the structure below:

  • 201: Principles and practices of hairdressing and barbering services; 90
  • 202: Shampoo. condition and treat the hair and scalp; 30
  • 203: Cut hair using basic techniques; 120
  • 204: Style and dress hair; 90
  • 206: Plait and twist hair; 30

For the Level 2 Technical Certificate for Hair Colouring Services the teaching programme must cover the content detailed in the structure below:

  • 201: Principles and practices of hairdressing and barbering services; 90
  • 205: Colour and lightening hair; 120
  • 207: Styling and finishing services; 60

Optional - Learners must be taught at least 90 GLH from Units 212 or 213

  • 212: Perm and neutralise hair; 90
  • 213: Relax hair; 90

For the Level 2 Technical Certificate in Hairdressing the teaching programme must cover the content detailed in the structure below:

  • 201: Principles and practices of hairdressing and barbering services; 90
  • 202: Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp; 30
  • 203: Cut hair using basic techniques; 120
  • 204: Style, set and dress hair; 90
  • 205: Colour and lighten hair; 120

Assessment requirements and employer involvement

To achieve the Level 2 Certificate for Cutting and Styling Services candidates must successfully complete the mandatory assessment components:

  • 009: Level 2 Cutting and Styling Services - Theory Exam (1)
  • 010: Level 2 Cutting and Styling Services - Synoptic Assignment (1)

Employer Involvement Requirement
Meaningful employer involvement
In all cases participating industry practititioners and employers must be relevant to the industry sector or occupation/occupational group to which the qualification relates.

  • Students undertake structured work-experience or work-placements hat develop skills and knowledge relevant to the qualification
  • Students undertake project(s), exercises(s) and/or assessments/examination(s) set with input from industry practitioner(s)
  • Students take one or more units delivered or co-delivered by an industry practitioner(s).  This could take the form of master classes or guest lectures.
  • Industry practitioners operates as 'expert witnesses' that contribute to the assessment of a students' work or practice, operating within a specified assessment framework.  This may be a specific project(s), exercise(s) or examination(s), or all assessments for a qualification.

Equipment / General Course Costs:

For those 16-18, course fees are not applicable, however learners will be required to buy a hairdressing kit, prices are TBC, but in the region of £200.00 for the essential kit requirements. There will be a recommended textbook list.  There is a salon dress code that has to be strictly adhered to; this requires candidates to wear a tunic & trousers / skirt (approximately £50.00).

Students over 19 at the start of the course will be expected to pay course fees, please enquire at the school.  Learners over 19 will be required to pay the registration and certification costs incurred by the awarding body, these are not confirmed but in the region of £90.00.

Uniform Requirements

Entry Requirement
Suitable applicants will be interviewed to assess their interest / passion for hairdressing.  They must be of smart appearance and have good interpersonal skills.  A level 1 qualification in hairdressing & beauty therapy or a minimum of 3 GCSE’s 9*-5 are required for entry on to this course.  The minimum 3 9*-5's are expected to be in the following subjects maths, English, science, computer science / IT or art and design subjects.  

How Parents can help
Learners will require support through their learning programme and a salon work placement.  Access to a PC at home is advantageous although not essential.  The school provides ICT facilities that learners can access outside of their timetable, during study periods. 

Progression
Upon successful completion of this qualification you can progress on to a Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Hairdressing or Level 2 and 3 Qualifications in Barbering.
