Entry Requirements

Minimum of 5 9-5 grades in GCSE examinations, including English and Maths, and a grade 6 in a Humanities subject.

Intent

Global politics is an exciting, dynamic subject that draws on a variety of disciplines in the social sciences and humanities.

This course consists of four core units: Power, Sovereignty & International Relations, Human Rights, Development, and Peace & Conflict. The course aims to give students:

  • Understanding of key political concepts and contemporary political issues in a range of contexts.
  • Understanding of the local, national, international and global dimensions of political activity.
  • Understanding, appreciation and critically engagement with a variety of perspectives and approaches in global politics.
  • Appreciation of the complex and interconnected nature of many political issues, and to develop the capacity to interpret competing and contestable claims regarding those issues.

Implementation

Throughout the course students will become more knowledgeable about political theories, systems and practices. This will lead to improved understanding of current affairs, and help students become more curious and considerate of the world around them.

Impact

Global Politics equips students with vital life skills that will help them survive and thrive in the world after school. Whether they choose further study at university or go straight into employment Global Politics provides essential insight into how political affairs will affect every aspect of their everyday lives.

Higher Level students also complete a focused Higher Level extension of global political challenges using independent case studies such as the ongoing tension in the South China Sea.

The course will enable you to apply key political concepts to contemporary issues and cases, analyse and evaluate multiple perspectives and evidence. Communicate political arguments effectively in writing and debates and conduct independent research.

Examination Information

Paper 1 (20%)

1 hour and 15 minutes source based questions 20% of final grade

Paper 2 (30%)

1 hour and 45 minutes extended essays linked to the thematic studies.

Paper 3 (30%)

1 hour and 30 minutes stimulus-based question linked to the case studies.
